Op de locatie van een voormalige MUWI-school in Rotterdam Lombardijen zal een nieuw onderkomen worden gebouwd voor een basisschool voor zeer moeilijk lerende kinderen. De bestaande gymzaal ernaast zal worden vervangen door een dubbele gymzaal. Beide gebouwen vormen ruimtelijk en functioneel een eenheid.
Aan de nieuwe school worden bijzondere eisen gesteld. De structuur moet helder, overzichtelijk en compact zijn zodat alle dagelijkse activiteiten zonder oponthoud en confrontaties goed kunnen verlopen. Tegelijkertijd moet het gebouw ondanks zijn openbare functie een huiselijk karakter hebben. Hier doen de kinderen immers niet alleen kennis op en worden ze voorbereid op de arbeidsmarkt maar leren ze vooral hun vrije tijd zinvol en sociaal te besteden. De kinderen in de school zijn tussen 12 en 20 jaar oud en worden onderwezen in kleine groepen van ca 7-10 kinderen per klas. De school bestaat uit een aantal specifieke vaklokalen waar de arbeidstoeleiding centraal staat en groepslokalen met een geheel andere sfeer en gebruik.
Bij het ontwerp spelen duurzaamheidsoverwegingen een beslissende rol. Alle materialen en bouwsystemen worden met veel zorg en ambitie gekozen en we besteden veel aandacht aan de integratie van een efficiënt, zuinig en gezond installatieconcept. In het gebouw zelf staat de ruimtelijke kwaliteit van de klaslokalen centraal. De splitlevel doorsnede zorgt voor daglicht in de centrale verkeersruimte.
Bij de stedenbouwkundige opzet ligt de nadruk op twee grote buitenruimtes. Een verhard (sport-)plein legt de link met de buurt. Hier bevinden zich de entrees van zowel de school als de dubbele gymzaal die door zowel de school als de buurt zal worden gebruikt. De ruime, aan drie kanten omsloten tuin heeft een geheel andere functie. Hier leren de kinderen met de natuur te leven en om te gaan. Ook de tuin kan en zal na schooltijd openstaan voor de kinderen uit de buurt. De buitenruimtes dragen bij aan het duurzame karakter van het project als geheel, waarbij sociale, technische, materiële en culturele aspecten gelijkwaardig naast elkaar staan.

For the site of a former school from the sixties built at the same time as the surrounding, rather derelict neighbourhood a new school will be built for the specific education for children with learning disabilities. The existing gymnasium on the location will be replaced. The new school and the new gymnasium will be designed as one building complex.
The children of the school, aged 12- 20, will be educated in small groups of about 7-10 children in generic classrooms. Additionally the building contains a number of specific classrooms for professional education. Here the children will be prepared for a modest professional career by learning skills such as cleaning, cooking, crafts and arts.
The school with its specific population requires a specific approach. Its structure needs to be exceptionally clear and compact to facilitate all daily activities in a smooth and controlled way. On the other hand the building needs a warm, almost domestic character: this school is not only a place to develop skills required by the professional world but also a place to simply learn how to live and spend free time in a meaningful and social manner.
Sustainability with all its aspects plays an important role in all design considerations. All chosen materials and building systems fulfil strict criteria and from an early stage onwards a specific attention has been paid to the integration of an efficient, energy-saving and healthy installation concept in the design. In the building itself the spatial quality of the classrooms is important to us such as lively, friendly use of daylight in the interior of the building.
In the urban layout the building is flanked by two carefully defined outdoor spaces next to the school. Both spaces ensure the building’s vitalising role for its neighbourhood. The paved entrance square can be used for different sports, manifestations and markets and connects the whole building complex to its site. The double gymnasium will be shared with other organisations and the neighbourhood. The enclosed but generously dimensioned, educational garden on the other site of the school has a completely different quality and purpose. Here the children learn to know and to deal with nature. This garden will be opened to the public after school hours. Both outdoor spaces contribute to the sustainable character of the project in general that addresses social, technical, material and cultural aspects with similar care and intensity.
